A field of 27, mixed with the State ’s best dragsters and altereds, gathered for the Veem Engineering Modified category at the WA Grand Final event for season 2009/10. With as many as five drivers still capable of taking out the championship, there was plenty of pressure and excitement in the lead-up to the event.
In what has at times been a rollercoaster season, the Serv Dragster was prepared for the fight to collect the WA number 1 spot. The Serv Dragster was number three, with a Personal Best (PB) 7.68, after two qualifying attempts.
After Round Two of Eliminations, and the exit of three of the five championship contenders, the title race was down to Simon Lekias in the Serv Dragster and Kim Nordahl in his front engine dragster. In progressing to the Semi-Finals, Lekias had the bye through to the final and Nordahl would face Brad Baker’s dragster to determine the other finalist. With the Serv Dragster waiting in the tunnel, the race between Nordahl and Baker was a cracker, with the win light coming on in Baker’s lane. It was at this point that Lekias could not be beaten for the championship, and while there was great excitement within the crew, there was still a focus on taking out the WA Grand Finals.
The final pitted two Osborne Motors powered dragsters against one another, with the Serv Dragster taking the win light after a Baker red-light; however a 7.64 on a 7.64 dial-in showed that the Serv Dragster was right on its game. ”What a way to win the championship, to go under and over our PB’s (7.64 @ 174mph) and to win the event is just unbelievable; a huge congratulations to Brad for making his first final of the year and congratulations to Kim, Andrew Katavatis, Kirsty Cunningham and Krystal Ecclestone for what was an incredible season“, Lekias remarked. ”To have the championship go down to the wire like that certainly was exciting, Modified is a tough bracket with some outstanding racers, and that will only strengthen with some old and new faces to return next year“.
”There are so many people that have been part of this achievement; Serv Auto Group, Osborne Motors, Kendall Motor Oil, Awesam Paintworks, Allan Farrer, Chris Dimoff, Allfast Torque Convertors, my wife and crew; thank you all for contributing to the Serv Dragster being the 2009/10 WA Modified Champion“, concluded Lekias.
The Serv Dragster will now be prepared for the long haul to the Nitro Championships at Sydney Dragway in May, before heading north to the season ending Winternationals at Willowbank Raceway in June.
